Methodist Bishop condemns kidnapping, calls on govt to rise up to occasion

Chairman, Governing Council, Methodist Theological Institute and Bishop of Remo, Methodist Church, Nigeria, Rt. Rev. Jacob Ibikunle, has condemned the problem of kidnapping in all its entirety as he called on the government to do more in the area of security with a view to giving Nigerians rest of mind.

He condemned the spate of criminality that has risen to the point that Nigerians could no longer travel by road without fear, within their own country.

Ibikunle stated this at a press briefing in Sagamu, at the 70th anniversary of Methodist Theological Institute with the theme: “Methodist Theological Institute @ 70: Expanding and consolidating,” which commenced on November 6 with the grand finale held November 10 and will climax with giving of awards to the Prelate, Methodist Church, Nigeria, His Eminence, Samuel Uche; former Prelate, His Eminence, Sunday Makinde and wife of former governor of Oyo State, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, among others.

The cleric, who according to him has been a victim of kidnapping, described the experience as very unpalatable as well as called on every Nigerian to shun tribalism and nepotism and fight insecurity, adding that it has reached the state of collective responsibility with no more time to be pointing accusing fingers to anyone.

“At times, we blame the ministers of God, after condemning the government but the reality is that everyone should be involved.

“We should look inward, love ourselves, embrace peace and collectively fight our common enemy by ensuring that anyone found to be indulging in the business of kidnapping is brought to book.

“There is insecurity in the land and it is suggesting incapacity because in other climes when violent crimes are committed, perpetrators are arrested and brought to justice within a short period of time.

“However, here in Nigeria, people are kidnapped, ransom paid and they are released and we do not get to hear of further outcome regarding the arrest or prosecution of the offenders.

“We need to get feedbacks in order to build the confidence of the people in the ability of the government to secure their lives and property.

“We cannot separate religion from politics because it is the conscience of the nation and so it is important for everyone to look inward and start living right.

“I want you to know that it is when we get it right as a nation, that we will experience development,” he said.

The Rector, Methodist Theological Institute, Very Rev. Raphael Idialu, said the anniversary officially started on penultimate Saturday, but that the anniversary torch has been around the country since September.

According to him,”Some of our activities include: Eucharistic service to hold today (Sunday), novelty match, symposium, award service for eminent people on Tuesday and the grand finally on Wednesday with 15 inductees on the school Hall of Fame.
